Equipped to Raise Disciples.

Updated: Jan 18

Let go of the fear and self-doubt and prepare to raise disciples with confidence.

Are you one of those mothers who has a real desire to lead your children to a meaningful and lasting relationship with the Lord, but you are often wracked with guilt and self-doubt, feeling unworthy of such a task?

If so, then you've come to the right place.

God doesn't expect you to be perfect, just faithful.

First things First

Are you sure of your own salvation? The truth is, as with anything, if we don't have knowledge and experience of walking in a relationship with God, we cannot confidently teach our children to do so.

If you have accepted Jesus as your Saviour that's great news and if you haven't, well that's great news too. What a strange thing to say, you may be thinking. But the fact that you are reading this blog post means you are still very much alive, and while there is still breath in you it's not too late. Jesus is just waiting for you to knock on the door of salvation.

Take some time to either re-commit your life to Jesus, or commit to believing in and following Him for the first time. I believe the one prayer Jesus will always answer with a resounding YES is when someone comes to him with a genuine desire to know him.

You don't become a Christian purely because your parents are Christians. Just like you don't become a car if you were born in a garage. It is a definite and personal choice you have to make to follow Jesus.

Growing Spiritually

When we become followers of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes and lives in us. It is this spirit that creates the desire in us to grow in our knowledge and love for the Lord. It is this same spirit that gives us the desire to lead our children to a meaningful and lasting relationship with Him.

Steps for growing spiritually

Prayer

Prayer is the most important step in your walk with God. It is as important for your spiritual growth as oxygen is for breathing. You cannot get to know God better if you never communicate with Him. Or if you seldom communicate with Him.

Spend much time in prayer. Ask God to prepare you and show you what needs to change in your life so that you can set the right example for your children.

If you are married, the ideal is that you pray together as a couple. Pray for each other, for your children, and for wisdom and willingness to be faithful, confident spiritual leaders for your children.

Sometimes it is difficult when your spouse is not willing or interested in being a spiritual leader in the home. Don't let this put you off. The wife is as much a spiritual leader in the home as the husband.

Spend time in the Word.

Just as you can't get to know God without regular communication, you can't get to know Him without setting aside regular time to study His Word. This is also the main way God will communicate with you.

There are so many treasures and pearls of wisdom to be found in God's Word. Make it a priority in your personal life and as a family to discover these treasures. Your life will be enriched and you will discover and lead the life God has planned for you.

Spend time with other believers.

Attend a Christ-centred church, take part in outreaches, join a Bible study group. When you get together with other believers, you are able to learn from, encourage and support each other.

Raising your children to be disciples of Jesus Christ can be daunting, especially is you feel that you yourself don't live up to God's expectations. Don't let the enemy use your weaknesses against you. God already knows you won't be perfect, that's why he sent Jesus in the first place.

Raising disciples starts with you. May you be blessed indeed as you embark on this important journey.
